A great smile is an asset for all. A beautiful smile is like icing on the cake for someone with a good looking face. A bright smile can instantly make anyone look more attractive. Many film stars and other celebrities are known for their smiles which creates beautiful dimples. Dimples are natural indentations on one or both the cheeks, and are considered to be the nature’s gift which adds another dimension to a person’s good looks. But believe it or not, medically, dimples are a kind of muscle deformity. They are usually formed when there is minute defect in the cheek musculature which occurs most often in the buccinators muscle. The skin which lies on this small defect gets pressed down on the connective tissues which lie underneath. This depression creates the dimple.
Fortunately, the people who are not blessed with natural dimples, a simple and minimally invasive procedure known as dimpleplasty can be the answer. It is relative straightforward and simple procedure.
Types of dimples
Some people may try to achieve dimples without any surgery. Long lasting dimples cannot be achieved with methods such as facial exercises. Methods such as cheek piercing do not create long lasting dimples.
The surgery for creating dimples is not a very long procedure. It takes about 20 minutes to half an hour to complete the procedure. The dimpleplasty is carried out under local anesthesia. It is an outpatient procedure and in many cases can be carried out on the same day as the patient comes in for the consultation. The dimples formed by the surgery are permanent. However, in a few cases, the dimple may appear to be improperly formed or may not visible. It happens in cases where the scar tissue is inadequately formed or where the sutures have broken during the healing. Before the procedure is carried the patient is prescribed antibiotics. A week prior to the procedure, blood thinning medicines such as aspirin should not be taken. Before the surgery, the surgeon will communicate with the patient regarding the depth and placement of the dimples. After the surgery, the cheeks may exhibit mild swelling, which usually subsides within a few days only.
How the procedure is performed
The procedure is done by making a small incision inside the mouth. The buccinators muscle is worked upon to create the dimples. The incision is then closed with stitches that can dissolve. Since the incision is made from inside the mouth, there are no visible scars.
Usually, once the surgery is performed, for certain duration of time, the dimples might appear to be unnatural and may be visible without a smile also. This duration can vary from one patient to another and could last from several days to several months. As the healing begins, the dimples become less obvious and will only be visible when the patient smiles. Although, in most cases this condition lasts only for a few days, it is better to be prepared for it to last for several weeks. A patient can eat or drink normally after the procedure though some patients may experience mild discomfort.
Complications and risks associated with dimple creation surgery
Most commonly mild bruising and swelling can be observed after the procedure. Rarely, a patient may experience temporary weakness of the muscles of the cheeks, which may last for several days. Also, if the proper post operative care is not taken, infection may also develop. In some cases, the sutures that hold the dimple may break down because of excessive swelling. This may cause the dimple to disappear. Some patients might not be happy with the results of the dimple creation surgery therefore they may desire a reverse procedure. The reversing of the procedure may or may not be successful. Therefore, it is imperative that the procedure is performed correctly in the first place.
Appearance of the dimples
The outcome of the surgery can be decided to some extent. The depth of the dimple can be decided beforehand, however there are certain variables associated with it. The shape of the face, the thickness of the cheeks, and amount of fat present in the cheeks and the symmetry of the facial muscles play an important role in the outcome of the surgery. The surgeon who performs the surgery can give an exact picture of what kind of dimple can be achieved and the resulting depth of the dimple can also be predicted.
