A face is normally considered to be attractive when all the features on it are in symmetry as well as proper proportion. Any feature which is not in optimum proportion in respect of other aspects of the face, can actually adversely affect the beauty of the face.
A person’s looks are bequeathed on him/her by God, but fortunately modern medicine has achieved many feats which can alter one’s appearance to one’s liking. Today, no one has to settle for something that they do not like. Cosmetic surgery has made it possible to achieve the look in the exact and precise manner one wants to.
What is Foreheadplasty?
Foreheadplasty, also known as Forehead reduction surgery, is done to reduce the size of the forehead in cases where it is very large or the hairline is too pulled back. In both the cases, the forehead can wrongly become the focus of the face. Anyone looking at a face with a large forehead has the tendency to notice the forehead at the first instant. But, with forehead plasty the hairline can be lowered and can be brought down to perfect proportions. Generally, surgeons today employ either one or a combination of the two commonly used procedures. The first procedure requires surgical removal of a portion of the forehead skin which brings the hairline down. The second one is carried out by grafting hair ahead of the natural hairline which in turn decreases the size of the forehead.
The foreheadplasty involves excising a piece of skin lengthwise in front of the natural hairline. The incision in this case rests behind the hairline. As the hair grows with time the scar becomes less visible. Also, with time lowering of hairline also becomes more evident. The surgery today is not very complicated however the time for scars to heal varies from one candidate to other.
Sometimes foreheadplasty is confused with hair grafting. Although both the procedures result in hairline lowering but they are two different procedures, which may or may not be used together. Also foreheadplasty is only done for reducing the size of the forehead and it has no effect on the position of the eyebrows.
Women who have normal hair but do not like their large forehead can choose this surgery. In women, the problem of a large forehead or a pulled back hairline gets worse with time, as ageing broadens the forehead even more. Generally, the procedure is carried out normally however since ageing reduces elasticity of the skin, in some cases this procedure is not effective in isolation. In those cases, a tissue expander is placed under the skin to reduce the hairline. This procedure is mostly carried out in the cases where the more than two inches of lowering is required. Generally, the procedure is most effective in patients with large forehead but thick amount of hair. In some cases the procedure can be coupled with hair grafting. Normal foreheadplasty can give the natural hairline a very “square” appearance because in this surgery it is not possible to move the hairline around the temples. Therefore, to achieve overall natural looking results, hair grafting can be done along with this surgery.
The most advanced and commonly used method for forehead lift is the Endoscopic Forehead Lift. This procedure is done to position the hairline better in addition to treating brow ptosis and also reduce the frown line. Endoscopic forehead lift can lift the eyebrows as well as the forehead. In the endoscopic procedure, thin instruments which are almost the thickness of a pencil are inserted in to the incisions which are made in the skin of the patient. On one end of the endoscope a camera is fitted which displays what it sees on the television monitor. The other endoscope has surgical tools attached to it. Before a surgeon decides to proceed with the surgery, he/she would communicate with the patient regarding the expectations from the procedure. The endoscopic method of forehead lift has numerous advantages over traditional procedures. Endoscopic surgery takes lesser time than normal surgical methods. Also, the incisions which are made on the patient’s skin during surgery are very small in length. The incisions are barely an inch long. Also, the incisions are made very close to the hairline, which helps them to conceal better. Smaller and shallow scars ensure that the recovery time is lesser and there are hardly any residual scars.
A very important marker of how well the surgeon has performed the surgery is by the appearance of scars. The scars should reduce in visibility. However a very important thing to be kept in mind is that the scars are more prominent in people with dark skin, whereas in people with light skin it is not so highly visible. The patients should undergo hair grafting and foreheadplasty only by a reputed and highly skilled surgeon.
