Eyelid Surgery

Blepharoplasty is a surgical method used over the eyelids. It is said that this blepharoplasty surgery is used to lift the eyelid but this is a misnomer as the eyelid is not lifted in this method but only the skin is removed and fat is either added or removed from the eyelids. This is done on the eyelids which are droopy as they can have floppy or loose skin and fat can get accumulated in the skin mainly due to stretching of the muscles supporting them. This happens because with the increase in age the skin of the eyelids loses their elastic property and they start looking baggy. This sometimes is hereditary and also can be due to longer exposure to the sun and also can be a result of excessive smoking. This makes the person look lethargic and older than the actual.

This technique is very old and it began during the time of ancient Greeks and the Romans when they could start writing since then. They first used this method of treatment to relax their eyelids. Mainly the readers and scholars used this technique as they had to spend most of their time reading and were busy with books. At that time, it was even used to cure the deformities in the eyes caused by cancer.

Why is Blepharoplasty surgery done?

Blepharoplasty is done mainly for two purposes, such as – firstly for the cosmetic reasons, to look better and secondly for the functional purpose to improve the vision.

Excess skin on the eyelids and accumulation of fat can give the eyelids a heavy looking look which may make the person look aged and also sometimes blocks the upper or peripheral vision. Blepharoplasty surgery in Delhi can remove these problems as it includes removing of the fats accumulated by incision and also by removing the skin to the extent required. This method is used to remove the droopiness from the eyelids and also prevent the sagging of the eyelids which sometimes makes it difficult to open the eyes. This makes the vision of the person better and also improvises the look and prevents from looking aged. This method can also treat the loose sagging skin that usually creates folds and hides the natural contour of the upper eyelid. It also treats the bag like appearance and also the loose and wrinkled skin on the lower eyelid.

Procedure

Before proceeding for the blepharoplasty surgery in delhi the patient should get prepared well with all the knowledge required about the surgery and also should take the pre operation and post operation advices and suggestions from the surgeon. Besides this the patient should also know about the potential risks and complications of the surgery, like –

  • Irritation in the eyes and the dryness of the eyes.
  • Infection.
  • Bleeding.
  • Difficulty in movement of the eyelids.
  • Discoloration of the skin of the eyelids.
  • Temporary blurry vision.
  • Scars that may stay visible.
  • General surgical risks.

Like all other facial surgical methods, Blepharoplasty in Delhi also includes incision which is followed by removal of skin and extra fats from the target area. After this has been done then stitches are used to bring the skin cut together which results in forming crease on the eyelid.

The upper eyelid is treated by making incision directly on the crease of the eyelid. And then mostly the fat is redistributed such that it gets improved and if in excess then it is removed. Sometimes the muscle needs to be modified to get the desired look and in some cases if the loose skin is in excess then it is cut and removed.

The lower eyelid can be treated using the method called trans conjunctival approach. This method involves skin incision made inside the eyelid or below the lash line. This method is mostly used for cosmetic purpose and is the best suited method for the patients who wants to add or remove fat from the eyelid. The benefit of this method is that it can be done without the incisions made being visible as they get concealed inside the skin of the eyelid. This method is sometimes combined with other methods to increase the efficiency like with laser resurfacing of the skin to reduce the lines and wrinkles.

This method to be used for treatment cannot be done by everyone as there are some requirements which need to be present in the patient to undergo this method of treatment else it may be risky and the potential risks may affect the patient. The patient wanting to undergo Blepharoplasty surgery in India needs to have one or more of the conditions like –

  • The upper eyelid having the natural folds being obscured by the excessive skin.
  • The vision being impaired by the loose and hanging skin of the upper eyelid, mostly the above and periphery vision.
  • Tiring looks to the eyes by the puffiness appearance.
  • Crepe paper type wrinkles on the lower eyelid due to excess skin there.
  • Bag like formation on the lower eyelid due to accumulation of excess fats there.
  • The droopiness like appearance on the lower eyelid.

These sorts of conditions must be visible in the patient else it is better not to proceed for the blepharoplasty in Delhi. Besides these conditions one important condition is that the patient should be in good health in terms of other diseases.

Besides these methods the modern day laser treatment is also used. In the Laser Blepharoplasty method of treatment, the laser is used in the surgery instead of the scalpel. This method is usually combined with the laser eyelid rejuvenation method as both methods can be efficiently used in conjunction.

Recovery Time

The recovery period after blepharoplasty surgery in Delhi is very short but the first 48 hours after the surgery are tough compared to rest of the period. After the surgery mild swelling and bruising starts which increases till the second day and after that vanishes. To prevent this and to get relief, the surgeon suggests to use cool packs during the first two days of surgery.

The incision is covered by bandages during the blepharoplasty in India which is removed right after the completion of the surgery. Stitches are used to bring the incised skin together. The stitches can be removed after the surgery and if self-absorbing stitches are used then they do not need to be removed as they get removed on their own.

The patient can begin the normal activities and do the usual jobs and tasks after 7th to 10th day from the blepharoplasty surgery in Delhi. All the swelling and bruising gets completely resolved after about two weeks from the day of surgery.

The upper eyelid treatment lasts long decades and the lower eyelid treatment need to be repeated rarely. The lifestyle also determines the long lasting of the treatment. Less exposure to sun and smoking can make it last long for a very long time.
